PSA - Saving Thanksgiving



How many of you have seen a Thanksgiving commercial?  What has happened to remembering this holiday?  Does it still have meaning in our country?  

Since October 11, 2013, commercials have been airing for Christmas!  That's well before Halloween!  See the ads in the posts below for samples of holiday commercials that have been airing during the months of October and November.  Is this okay?  Does this diminish the meaning of Thanksgiving and Christmas?

You have been hired to create a PSA (Public Service Announcement).  Below is information on what a PSA is and how you go about creating one.

What is a PSA?
Public service announcements, or PSA's, are short messages produced on film, videotape, DVD, CD, audiotape, or as a computer file and given to radio and television stations.  They can be done very simply with a single actor reading or performing a message, or they can be elaborate, slickly-produced messages with music, dramatic story-lines, and sound or visual effects.

How do you write a PSA?

Decide upon and clarify the purpose of your PSA. What are your goals here? What do you want to accomplish by putting a PSA on the air? Target your audience. What type of people are you hoping to reach through your PSA? 

Key points to remember about the writing:
  • Because you've only got a few seconds to reach your audience (often 30 seconds or less), the language should be simple and vivid. Take your time and make every word count. Make your message crystal clear.
  • The content of the writing should have the right "hooks" -- words or phrases that grab attention -- to attract your audience (again, you need to know who your audience is).
  • The PSA should usually (though maybe not 100% of the time) request a specific action, such as calling a specific number to get more information. You ordinarily want listeners to do something as a result of having heard the PSA.

Argument Pieces




The purpose of writing an argument is to support a claim and/or convince others to think or act in a certain way, to encourage readers or listeners to share the writer's opinion, beliefs, or position.  Argument pieces are also known as persuasive writing.

In developing an argument, you must make a claim and supply valid reasons, facts, and expert opinions to support it.  Phrases such as I think, the facts show, and the evidence shows all signal arguments.

There are some things to keep in mind when you write to persuade others:
  • Audience: 
    • Who are your readers?
    • How will your reader feel about the subject?
  • Introduction:
    • State your position in the introduction.
    • Let your readers know what side of an issue you re taking.
  • Body:
    • Provide logical reasons, examples, or facts to convince your readers that your position is the correct one.
    • Be sure your supporting details are relevant to your position.
    • State the opposing arguments, then show why they are weak or unimportant.
  • Conclusion:
    • Briefly summarize your strongest evidence.
    • Don't add any new reasons in the conclusion, but restate your position in a positive, convincing manner.
    • Call on your audience to take action based on your arguments.

Journal - 8/20/13




In most parts of the world, kids attend school all year round, and only have the month of August off. My friend from Japan talked about when he moved to the U.S., he was thrilled to have June, July, and August off. He said he didn’t know what to do with himself! (His mom promptly enrolled him in “summer classes” – poor guy). Another friend who recently went to London mentioned how the whole country practically shuts down for “holiday” in August. So I guess we should be grateful for small blessings like 2 ½ months of summer vacation!
But, now back-to-school time is here. The memories of summer will be tucked away, to make room for new memories in the coming school year (sniff sniff).
So, for today’s journal I want to hear from you about Back-to-School:
What are you most looking forward to? What are you most dreading? What are your goals for the coming school year? What do you hope to accomplish?
Your journal will serve as a representative of you.  So, you should pay attention to detail, write quality sentences, with appropriately leveled vocabulary, and be mindful of the length (not too long, not too short) of your paragraph(s).
